Data foundations for European banks

Standardising data architecture and implementing data lakes at European banks to meet BCBS 239, while cutting reconciliation defects and onboarding variance.

The mandate

Banks answer to supervisors for the quality of their risk data. Years of regional and domain-specific systems had left data architectures that differed from one unit to the next, which made reporting slow and reconciliation expensive.

What I did

  • Standardised the architecture. Harmonised data architectures across domains and regions for a global bank.
  • Built the platforms. Standardised data architecture and implemented data lakes at European banks to comply with BCBS 239.
  • Set the rules. Defined data strategy, governance and stewardship for eight domains.

What changed

Onboarding variance fell by around 25% and reconciliation defects by around 50%. Critical data element coverage rose by around 40%. The data lake programmes carried a total contract value of roughly €12.5M.
